Because I can no longer find a replacement lid for my old Cuisinart DLC-8 Food Processor from 1984. Yes! 35 years old and working well except for a break in the plastic lid that prevented the lid from locking in place, and therefore prevented the safety interlock from working properly. I bought this Cuisinart DFP-14CNYC Food Processor as a replacement. Great choice. Size is perfect for my cooking. Motor is super powerful, quiet, and of the same direct drive, squirrel cage induction motor design as before.

What has changed? The feed tube has some minor changes that make it easy to clean some tight corners that were impossible with the 1984 design. The safety interlock seems more complex in that it has more moving parts that are mostly plastic. This causes me some concern that this will not last as long as my old machine. Despite that, I like the way that the new safety interlock works. I just put the large feed tube pusher in place. This means I can pull the feed tube pusher straight up and out, insert something else into the feed tube, replace the pusher and shred/slice/chop it without further removing the lid. With the old design I had to twist the lid to unlock the feed tube pusher. The blade assembly is lighter but seems strong. The body is stainless steel rather than the old white body and the two buttons are black but the design is much the same as before. The new machine has a 2-prong plug while the old one was 3 prong. I have no concern there because the body is really all insulation with a stainless steel outer cladding.

The old Cuisinart came with a special 2-finger spatula for cleaning inside the main blade. The new Cuisinart does not come with this, but the blade seems to have a larger interior hole and so far I have had no difficulty cleaning it. The old Cuisinart came with a dough blade, a smaller plastic blade for kneading larger batches of dough. With the new Cuisinart, you just use the metal blade for dough. I seldom used the plastic one so this is no loss. Cuisinart has reduced the number of accessories for their food processor since the 1980s. Perhaps they learned what was useful and what was not. As with the original, this one came with a 4 mm slicer and a medium grater disk. I intend to buy a 2 mm slicer disk to replace my old 1 mm slicer that I loved for certain things. Unfortunately, the old accessories will not fit the new machine. Perhaps not surprising, given that the old machine was 11 cup and the new one is 14 cup capacity.

Overall, this is the workhorse that I expected, based on my previous Cuisinart Food Processor. I use it a lot, and am happy with it. This one has a more powerful motor than my old model, is a bit larger, but overall looks and functions much the same.

We have had our original Cuisinart for 25 Plus years. These are amongst the best small kitchen appliances you can buy. Although relatively expensive compared to other manufacturers they perform admirably and last almost forever. The only caution I could give is to wash all plastic components by hand in warm water because continued washing in a dishwasher can cause very minor fitting issues, probably due to excessive heat during drying cycle. The blades are hellishly sharp and cut hands easily so I wash all metal components in the dishwasher. This as a tool that you will be glad you have

The tolerances on this machine are great! Much better than previous Cuisinart food processors I've owned.

The pulse setting has a fast start/stop, meaning you can dice and chop without the contents getting pummeled or mushed.

The shredding, slicing and grating attachments usually don't leave much extra on the top of the disc when the plunger is fully down.

The improved chopping blade is sturdier than in older models (which had stress on the metal blade eventually cause the plastic to crack) and the coverage to the bottom and sides of the container is best in class.

The latch post is now metal instead of plastic, which appears to be much more durable. The enclosure is now more enclosed, making it easier to keep clean, but harder to get clean if you spill something inside that area.

I am surprised at all the good reviews found here. This food processor has been a great disappointment.
It is VERY heavy - I usually need my husband just to drag it on the counter.
But the WORST is the locking mechanism: complicated and almost impossible to use. I was NEVER able to do it, again I had to rely on my husband.
To top it all, at less than one year of only occasional use, it started seriously leaking - it appears that the lock did not provide proper sealing anymore. I was making a cream of vegetables soup and ended up with most of it on the counter - NOT fun! AVOID.

I own a Cuisinart food processor that I've had for at least 13 years. All of a sudden it quit and I was excited to purchase a new one of the same quality. I was a bit disappointed with the new one as the "jar" won't hold as much as my old 13 cup food processor. The post in the middle of this model is not as high as my old one, so even though it says 14 cups, if using it to blend liquids, etc. it will really only hold 3 cups at best. I used my old for liquids quite often so this didn't really meet my expectations. My brother was able to fix my old one and I sent the new one back.

1.0 out of 5 stars Huge disappointment

This is my third Cuisinart food processor since 1994; I've always relied on my Cuisinarts for a wide range of uses (I am a former caterer), couldn't imagine cooking without one, and I was really excited to get a new model. I am incredibly disappointed, and have decided to throw this inferior product away. Every time I use it, at least 1/3 cup of any mixture remains lodged beneath the blade, and only ingredients around the outer edge are adequately mixed, so that I end up pouring out the contents and stirring them by hand. The latches of the redesigned lid are impossible to clean, no matter what tool I try, so that residual food remains and makes this appliance dangerously unhygienic. It's too late for a refund, so I will look for another food processor maker; done with Cuisinart!

Great when it works, but I haven't been able to use mine in months. The motor doesn't break but the plastic does, and when you ask for a replacement part, you wait forever for the thing to arrive. In my case, when it did arrive, it was the wrong part, and when I asked them to replace the replacement, I got shuttled around from one operator to another. After 5 (that's five) calls over 3+ weeks, the part showed up, but it's the same wrong one they sent me the first time. While all this is going on, you have an expensive machine sitting on your counter that you can't use. Not worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Efficient & Enjoyable Food Processor

I just received this machine as a gift about a week ago. It is has already been put to good use in my home kitchen! Today alone I diced mushrooms & onions, shredded cheese, and sliced strawberries, apples, & tomatoes. They were all done beautifully without damaging the food in process. This gave perfectly shredded cheese, beautifully sliced fruits & vegetables, and the mushrooms & onions were diced just right for my homemade "cream of soup". I am surprised at the speed at which it processes and still has smooth clean cuts without mashing the food. It is also very quiet!

The bowl was large enough to hold the whole 2 lb block of shredded cheese. The 2 openings, large & small, were both used today. Having the smaller feed tube, I was able to stack my strawberries in and keep them from tumbling around which helped provide more uniform slices. Having the larger, I was able to cut my 2 lb block of cheese into 4ths and have the entire block shredded in no time. The larger would not hold my whole tomato set in right side up, but I was able to turn my tomatoes sideways and get beautiful slices anyway.

I did take some pictures/video along the way to show processes and comparisons on the different blade thicknesses. I did purchase some extra discs alongside my gift that included the thin slicing blade as well as the thick. I used the shredding disc & slicing disc that came with the machine for the cheese & tomatoes. I cut the strawberries with all three just to show a comparison and so others could see how it would slice if they were considering purchase of another thickness.

I included the strawberry slicing short video just so you could see how quickly it diced and compare it to the end product. Left to right in the strawberry photo the strawberries are sliced with a thin (2mm), medium (4mm), thick (8mm) disc - the middle one (4mm) is the one that comes standard with the machine.

I am finding this machine easy to handle and a joy to have in my kitchen. It's easy to operate. I now have a feel for how to insert & change the discs, so it really has been an simple yet very efficient machine. I highly recommend.
